After TMC, AAP Decides To Boycott Inauguration Of New Parliament Building; Congress May Also Skip

New Delhi: After the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also decided to boycott the scheduled inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A political controversy has erupted over the scheduled inauguration of the new Parliament building by PM Modi with Opposition saying that it should be done by the President, not the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the newly-constructed Parliament building on May 28.

“Aam Aadmi Party will boycott the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building on 28th May. AAP has taken this decision in view of the questions being raised regarding the matter of not inviting the President to the inauguration ceremony,” the Arvind Kejriwal-led party said in a statement.

The TMC has also decided to boycott the inauguration event of the new Parliamnet building. “TMC will boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28,” TMC’s Lok Sabha leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay said.

“We are opposed to the Prime Minister inaugurating the new Parliament building. The President should inaugurate it,” TMC MP Saugata Roy said.

The Congress is also considering boycotting the event. Senior party leader KC Venugopal is speaking to all like-minded parties to take a final call on the decision, sources said.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the President, not the Prime Minister, should inaugurate India’s new Parliament building. In a tweet, Gandhi said, “The President should inaugurate the new Parliament House and not the Prime Minister.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met PM Modi last week and extended an invitation to inaugurate the new building, the Lok Sabha Secretariat had said.

Besides Gandhi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi also hit out at the Modi government and said that the head of the legislature should do the inauguration, not the head of the government.

“Why should PM inaugurate Parliament? He is head of the executive, not the legislature. We have separation of powers & Hon’ble @loksabhaspeaker & RS Chair could have inaugurated. It’s made with public money, why is PM behaving like his ‘friends’ have sponsored it from their private funds?” he asked.
