Chandigarh: BJP Defeats AAP-Congress Alliance In Chandigarh Mayor Election, Days Before Delhi PollsThe BJP clinched victory with 19 votes in the Chandigarh mayoral elections while defeating the AAP-Congress alliance which got only 17 votes.
The elections culminated with BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla defeating AAP’s Prem Lata by two votes.
A High-Stake Poll
The Chandigarh mayoral elections were a high-stake battle between the AAP-Congress alliance and the BJP.
The elections started at 11:20 am and ended at 12:19 pm. The polling was carried out in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation’s assembly hall.
There are 35 members in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation which include Chandigarh MP and elected councillors. The MP enjoys voting rights as an ex-officio member.
Before the polling, AAP had 13 councillors, BJP had 16, Congress had 6 and Chandigarh MP (Congress) had one.
Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat shifted his allegiance to the BJP a few days before the polls.
The election was carried out using secret ballot. The presiding officer was councillor Ramneek Singh Bedi and retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jaishree Thaku was appointed like an independent observer by the Supreme Court to oversee the polls.
The election proceedings were recorded as per the direction of the top court.
