International IDEA will launch Fifth Edition of ‘The Global State of Democracy 2023: The New Checks and Balances’ on 2nd Nov.

International IDEA will launch the fifth edition of its flagship report, The Global State of Democracy 2023: The New Checks and Balances, on Thursday, 2 November 2023 from 17:00 to 18:30 CET.

Alongside a presentation of the Report’s findings and recommendations, the launch will feature a panel discussion on the role countervailing institutions play in the advancement of democracy. Going beyond traditional ‘checks and balances’, countervailing institutions also include the bodies, movements and institutions that protect the equilibrium of power between the people and the government. 

H.E. Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, President of Botswana and H.E. Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste, will deliver keynote addresses.
