New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday said that even though the opposition parties do not agree with the “one nation, one election principle”, it is their democratic responsibility to discuss the matter.
“An issue came up regarding one nation, one election. They (Opposition) are saying that we will not discuss it at all. It’s your job to discuss it; Addressing the students in Rajasthan’s Kota, Dhankhar said, it is your discretion to agree or disagree with it.
Rajya Sabha Chairman further said that political parties have the right to do their politics, but it is not possible that they do not debate, do not communicate, do not discuss.
“If there is no discussion in a democracy, where is that democracy? Dhankhar said, it is necessary for democratic values that there should be discussions and debates.
The Centre’s decision to convene a five-day special session of Parliament from September 18 to 22 triggered speculation of introducing the One Nation, One Election Bill for simultaneous national and state assembly polls. The agenda of the special session has not been revealed yet.
Dhankhar, who was on a day-long visit to Kota, also participated in a program organized to felicitate pensioners. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi also attended the programme.
