New Delhi, 27 November : Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla and Deputy Chairman , Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh paid floral tributes to Shri Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, the first Speaker of Lok Sabha in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan , on his birth anniversary, today.
Secretary-General, Lok Sabha, Shri Utpal Kumar Singh also paid floral tributes to Shri Mavalankar.
Shri Mavalankar was born on 27 November 1888 at Baroda, presently part of Gujarat. He commenced his political journey in 1937 representing Ahmedabad in the Bombay Legislative Assembly. He served as Speaker from 1937 to 1946. His leadership continued as President of the Sixth Central Legislative Assembly until India’s Independence on the historic night of August 14-15, 1947. After Independence, he held the revered position of Speaker of the Constituent Assembly (Legislative) from November 17, 1947. With India embracing its newfound freedom through the Constitution on November 26, 1949, Shri Mavalankar assumed the mantle of Speaker in the Provisional Parliament. He guided the proceedings until the formation of the first Lok Sabha in 1952. Elected as the Speaker of the First Lok Sabha on May 15, 1952, he dedicatedly served until his passing on February 27, 1956. His commitment and contributions remain an enduring part of India’s legislative history.
The portrait of Shri Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar is placed in the Inner Lobby, Lok Sabha Chamber, Samvidhan Sadan and was unveiled by the then Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, on 07.09.1956 .
