Srinagar : A massive ruckus erupted in the inaugural session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, which convened after a hiatus of six years when PDP MP Wahid Parra presented an impromptu resolution against the removal of Article 370. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers vehemently opposed the move, even as the Speaker clarified no resolution was admitted by him in the Assembly proceeding.
Notably, the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, Article 370, was scrapped by the Centre in August 2019. Besides, the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two union territories– J-K and Ladakh.
Meanwhile, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has hailed Parra’s resolution on J-K. “Proud of Waheed Parra for introducing a resolution in the JK Assembly opposing the revocation of Article 370 and resolving to restore the special status. God bless you,” she posted on X.
This is the maiden session of the J-K Assembly since Omar Abdullah was elected as the Chief Minister of the UT. Abdullah recently met PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during his Delhi visit. Talking to the media, he said he was assured at higher places that JK statehood would be reinstated soon.
People’s Conference leader Sajjad Lone took a dig at CM Abdullah for felicitating PM Modi and HM Shah with Kashmiri shawls during his Delhi visit.
Omar Abdullah’s Reaction On Resolution
CM Abdullah said the PDP MLA resolution on Article 370 was only for cameras and deliberation was required if he really intended to push it through, adding that J-K people still do not approve of Centre’s August 2019 move and it was reflected in poll results.
“The reality is that the people of J&K do not approve of the decision taken on 5th August 2019. If they had approved, then the results today would have been different. How the House will reflect and discuss this will not be decided by any one member. The resolution brought today has no importance but it is only for the cameras. If there was a purpose behind it, then they would have discussed this with us before,” he said.
Earlier, Abdullah categorically said he would not fool around saying they would demand a rollback from the BJP on Article 370 as they were the ones who introduced it. He said they would wait for a regime change and the issue was in their agenda.
