Speaker administers oath to MLAs, WB Governor retaliates

Kolkata: Forced to go back on his decision to devoid Assembly Speaker of the power to administer oath to newly elected MLAs, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar later retaliated by confronting the state government on the issue of investments said to have been generated under the name of Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS).

In the Assembly today, Speaker Biman Banerjee administering oath to the newly elected MLAs Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Udayan Guha, Brajakishore Goswami and Subrata Mondal.

Last month, when three newly elected MLAs, including CM Mamata Banerjee, took oath, they were sworn in by the Governor. Dhankhar, who is having conflicts with Biman Banerjee on multiple issues, withdrew the power entrusted to the Speaker to administer oath to MLAs. As a result, the Governor himself administered oath to Mamata Banerjee and two other candidates last month.

For the swearing-in ceremony, Dhankhar had initially recommended the name of Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee for administering the oath. However, the Governor later agreed to allow Biman Banerjee administer oath after the CM intervened and had talk with him.
