New Delhi: Samajwadi Party MLC Lal Bihari Yadav is likely to be the Leader of Opposition in the UP Legislative Council as his party has sent a resolution in this regard to the Speaker of the Upper House.
The tenure of Samajwadi Party MLC Sanjay Lather, who was till now the Leader of the Opposition, ended on Thursday. After the death of MLC Ahmed Hassan, the then Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, the SP had entrusted this responsibility to Lather.
On Thursday, a proposal to recommend MLC Lal Bihari Yadav for the post from Varanasi block teacher area was sent by SP to the Legislative Council Speaker.
Lal Bihari Yadav, a resident of Azamgarh, was elected MLC in 2020 and his term will end in 2026. He was the principal of Lal Bihari Inter College, established by the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Teachers Association (Financeless Group).
Yadav came into the limelight by taking out a 1200 km teacher sandesh padyatra from Ballia to Mathura in 49 days and continued to fight for the interests of the teachers. Also, the upcoming Azamgarh Lok Sabha by-election is also believed to be the reason for making him the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council as Dimple Yadav, wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, is set to be fielded by the party from that seat.
