New Delhi : The report of the joint committee of Parliament that is looking into the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be tabled in Parliament on February 13, according to news agency ANI. It was tabled in Lok Sabha on February 1.
Meanwhile, the record of evidence presented before the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will also be tabled.
On Thursday, the Committee delivered its findings to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The JPC, which accepted its report by a majority vote last week, stated that it included revisions made by members of the ruling BJP, prompting the opposition to label the process an effort to dismantle Waqf boards.
With a 15-11 vote, the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill approved the report on the proposed law.
Members of the opposition filed dissenting notes to the report. BJP MPs emphasised that the Bill, which was tabled in the Lok Sabha in August of last year, aims to modernise, bring transparency, and accountability in the Waqf property administration.
The opposition, on the other hand, described it as an attack on the Muslim community’s fundamental rights and an interference with the operation of Waqf boards.
