19 new Rajya Sabha members take oath, blending experience with fresh leadership

New Delhi: Nineteen newly elected members from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Odisha were sworn in to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, formally commencing their tenure in Parliament’s Upper House.
The oath or affirmation was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan in accordance with constitutional procedures. The ceremony featured a mix of seasoned leaders and first-time entrants, reflecting diverse political representation from across the states.

Among the prominent figures taking the oath were Ramdas Athawale and Sharad Pawar from Maharashtra, along with Anbumani Ramadoss and Tiruchi Siva from Tamil Nadu.

From Maharashtra, those sworn in included Ramdas Bandu Athawale, Maya Chintaman Ivnate, Sharadchandra Pawar, Ramrao Sakharam Wadkute, and Jyoti Nagnath Waghmare. Tamil Nadu’s representatives comprised Christopher Manickam, Anbumani Ramadoss, Constandine Ravindran, LK Sudhish, M Thambidurai, and Tiruchi Siva.

West Bengal’s new entrants included Babul Supriyo, Menaka Guruswamy, Rajeev Kumar, Rukmini Mallik and Biswajit Sinha. From Odisha, Santrupt Mishra, Dilip Kumar Ray, and Manmohan Samal also took the oath.

The Rajya Sabha, or Council of States, is a key pillar of India’s bicameral parliamentary system, representing the interests of states and Union Territories.

Members are elected by state legislative assemblies or nominated by the President in select cases. With a blend of experienced lawmakers and new voices, the latest entrants are expected to play an active role in shaping legislative debates and national policy.
