22 Punjabis make historic gains in Canada’s House of Commons elections

Canada : Maple Leaf Canada has achieved a historic milestone with the newest federal election: a record 22 candidates of Punjabi descent have earned seats in the House of Commons. This represents a significant rise from the 18 candidates of Punjabi descent in 2021 and the 20 candidates in 2019, respectively.

An important new chapter in Ottawa’s multicultural scene has begun, as this surge highlights the increasing political power of one of Canada’s major immigrant populations. But none of the political parties won a majority in Canada’s 343-member House of Commons in the April 28 snap federal election. On March 23, the New Democratic Party (NDP) had 24 seats, the Bloc Quebecois 33, the Green Party 2, the Conservatives 120, and the governing Liberal Party 152.

Daily tariff threats, threats to Canada’s sovereignty, unity, integrity, and reputation, and strategic, immigration, and economic challenges from US President Donald Trump to become the 51st state threatened Canada’s economy. Some assumed the voters would elect a majority government with a skilled leader this time. The electorate has picked a hung parliament five times in eight elections. The country has shaped foreign, administrative, security, and economic policies.

Statistics indicate that Canadians have supported Liberal Party Prime Minister Mark Carney with a minority administration and hung parliament in 2019, 2021, and 2025. According to current estimates, the Liberal Party will receive 169 seats, the Conservative 144, the NDP 7, Quebec 23, and the Green Party 1.

The US president unexpectedly intervened embarrassingly on election day. He wished you luck and urged Canadians to vote for me because I can cut taxes in half, strengthen your military, take you to the top of the world for free, buy your products, and develop you fourfold with no taxes or tariffs if you become the 51st state. Marco Rubio, US Secretary of the Interior, said Trump’s real goal is to fix the Canada trade deficit. Addressing trade policies directly will solve this. Pierre Poilievre and Mark Carney, Conservative and Liberal party leaders, immediately said Trump should not run in the Canadian elections. Canadians will pick their destiny at the voting box. Canada values independence, sovereignty, unity, and integrity. The US 51st state will never be Canada.

Unexpected election outcomes have occurred. Although Pierre Poliver wanted political change, he aimed for a significant victory in the January 2025 federal elections to form a government. The Conservative Party’s 2015, 2019, and 2021 federal election defeats and his loss of Carleton, Ontario, drove him to campaign vigorously. His constituency had 19 candidates. The Conservatives won the district but lost Poliver’s seat. It went to Liberal Party leader Bruce Fanjoy. Voters chose him over Poliver 42374 to 38581. This shocked conservatives.

The second surprising result is the defeat of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh in British Columbia, where his party is also in government. Singh’s party lost its status as a recognised opposition party in the House of Commons. Any political party needs 12 House seats for this status. Punjabis are gaining ground in outcomes. Of the 65 candidates battling with Punjabi and Sikh groups, 22 are winning this time, up from 18 last time. Ruby Sahota, Maninder Sidhu, Anita Anand (Cabinet Minister), Bardish Chagar (Former Minister), Anju Dhillon, Mukh Dhaliwal, Ikwinder Singh, Randeep Singh, Gurbaksh Saini, and Liberal Party member Param Bains are key victors. Conservative Party Punjabi candidates Jasraj Hallan, Davinder Gill, Amandeep Gill, Arpan Khanna, Tim Uppal (former minister), Param Gill, Sukhman Gill, Jagsharan Singh Mahal, Herb Gill, etc. won.

Another surprise was that opposition conservative party leader Poilievre will immediately oppose the gallery instead of the house floor because he has lost his own seat. It might take months for Poilievre to run in, even if someone bows out from sapphire-blue Alberta.

It was an extremely humiliating political experience. Catching a 200+ seat wave election is different. Losing your seat while your party performed well is much more humiliating. Election results confirmed that the leader’s image weighed down the party. It’s uncertain if anyone can withstand such political embarrassment, but Danielle Smith has become the Premier of Alberta after defecting to a party that has seen a decline from 70 to 9 seats, and she also lost her seat. Therefore, anything can happen.

Key Liberal Party candidate Kamal Khera (Cabinet Minister) lost. Canada will again lead the minority Liberal Party under new economic guru Mark Carney. With an 85 per cent majority, Mark Carney took over from Trudeau and called a quick federal election on March 23. October 2025 was the general election date. He won the Nepean constituency election on April 28.

Mark Carney was Governor of the Banks of Canada and England. He became famous for helping Canada recover from the 2007-08 recession. Like Dr. Manmohan Singh, he is a world-renowned economist. Instead of repairing relations with the US, he wants trade and commercial ties with the EU, China, and India.

After becoming PM, he visited the UK and France for this. As the 25th prime minister, he leads the nation. The Trump catastrophe, tariffs, and adding Canada as the 51st state are his government’s greatest challenges. The giant rise in the cost of living, the economic slump, the shortage of housing and healthcare providers for families, government expenditures, crime and drug trafficking, immigration, the environment, and taxation are among major issues.

We are strengthening national security. In the following months, Mark Carney, Canada’s economic specialist, will guide a nation through numerous obstacles.
