Assam Assembly backs 33% reservation for women in Parliament, state legislatures

Guwahati : The Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution supporting one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures after the completion of the delimitation process.

Moving the resolution in the House, Assam Women and Child Development Minister Ajanta Neog said the proposal aimed to strengthen women’s empowerment and ensure greater participation of women in governance following delimitation.

“I propose the urgent implementation of one-third reservation for women in all state assemblies across India following delimitation,” she said.

Neog said women constitute nearly 50 per cent of India’s population and Assam reflects a similar demographic reality.

“It is the responsibility of the nation to take them forward, not only politically, but socially as well,” she added.

Referring to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam introduced in Parliament in 2023 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Neog said the legislation had raised hopes among women across the country for greater political representation.

She added that Assam was joining other NDA-ruled states in formally urging the Centre to move ahead with the implementation of the legislation.

“I request everyone in this House to approve this historic resolution irrespective of political parties and alliances. I stand here today as a representative of women’s participation in politics. This resolution is not just for Assam, but for women across the country,” Neog said.

The minister also referred to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, introduced in Parliament on April 16 this year, aimed at expediting the implementation of the 33 per cent women’s quota in Parliament alongside delimitation-related legislation.
