Australia : Search begins for next Parliament House artist-in-residence

VISUAL artists are being offered a rare chance to go behind the closed doors of federal politics under a residency program at Parliament House.

The Department of Parliamentary Services has opened applications for its artist-in-residence program, inviting creators at any stage of their career to immerse themselves in the national capital.

The successful applicant will secure a financial package worth up to $55,000, which includes a $10,000 research fee, a commission fee of up to $30,000 to produce new work, and a $15,000 travel and accommodation allowance.

The residency also grants exclusive access to a dedicated workspace within the Parliamentary Library.

Federal member for Corangamite Libby Coker said the initiative bridges the gap between creative practice and national history, offering unparalleled access to the building’s daily operations.

“This is a great initiative to highlight the work of Australian artists and to give them the opportunity to see behind the scenes of Parliament House,” she said.

“It is important to support the arts, and this program provides a rare opportunity for Australian artists to grow and showcase our democracy through their own creativity.”

The initiative honours the original vision of Parliament House architects Mitchell, Giurgola & Thorp, who intended for contemporary art to be deeply integrated into the building’s daily function and design to reflect the evolving identity of the nation.

Applications for the residency program are open nationwide and will close at 11am on Tuesday 16 June.
