Baharin : Marriage loan plan heads to Parliament vote

Manama : Young people could get government loans to help them marry without paying a penny in interest under a plan MPs will debate and vote today

The scheme would help couples meet the cost of starting married life without facing extra interest bills, giving those struggling to find the money a helping hand.

MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi, who put forward the plan, says the loans would ease the strain on young people hoping to wed and help them build a home together.

Parliament’s financial and economic affairs committee, headed by MP Ahmed Al Salloom, has given the proposal its full support, with all members voting in favour.

The committee said the loans would encourage young people to marry and help them pay for their early household needs without the added cost of interest.

Dr Al Nuaimi said the aim was to help young couples start married life on sound financial footing while strengthening family life.

But key questions remain unanswered.

The plan gives no figure for how much couples could borrow, who would qualify or how long they would have to pay the money back.

It also leaves open which government body would hand out the loans and oversee repayments.
