Dhaka : The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmakers will be heading 48 out of 50 committees in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad following the formation of the four remaining standing committees on Thursday.
The 13th Jatiya Sangsad comprises 39 ministerial standing committees and 11 subject-based committees.
The opposition holds chairmanships in just two committees, with Jamaat-e-Islami lawmakers heading the public accounts committee and the committee on private members’ bills and resolutions.
The four newly constituted bodies—all headed by BNP lawmakers—are the parliamentary standing committees on the defence ministry; power, energy and mineral resources ministry; public administration ministry; and public undertakings.
Chief whip Nurul Islam Moni proposed the formation and reconstitution of the committees, which were passed by voice vote in the parliament.
Among the new appointments, Md Ashraf Uddin (Narsingdi-5) was named chairman of the defence committee, Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu (Shariatpur-3) chairman of the power, energy and mineral resources committee, Sayeed Ahmed (Shariatpur-1) chairman of the public administration committee, and chief whip Nurul Islam Moni chairman of the public undertakings committee.
Seven existing committees were also reconstituted, including private members’ bills and resolutions, Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs, agriculture, women and children affairs, youth and sports, education, and foreign affairs.
Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury (Chattogram-15) chairs the committee on private members’ bills and resolutions, while Jamaat lawmaker Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher heads the committee on public accounts.
