Bihar Assembly Speaker begins Meghalaya study tour, eyes parliamentary best practices

SHILLONG : Bihar Assembly Speaker Dr Prem Kumar is on a four-day official visit to Meghalaya to study the state’s legislative functioning and parliamentary activities as part of an inter-state exchange programme.

The Speaker arrived in Shillong on Tuesday with his delegation and is scheduled to stay until May 29.

His itinerary covers Shillong and Sohra, focusing on parliamentary procedures as well as visits to historical and cultural sites.

Dr Kumar is accompanied by his spouse, Prabhawati Devi, and a team of officials and security personnel from the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

The study tour is designed to facilitate learning between state legislatures. “The visit is aimed at studying legislative functioning and parliamentary activities in the state, along with visits to places of historical and cultural significance,” officials said.

During the tour, the delegation will engage with the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat to review House proceedings, committee systems, and governance models. The team will also tour key heritage locations to understand the cultural context of the state’s policy framework. The exchange is expected to boost collaboration between the two legislatures.

“The visit is expected to further strengthen inter-legislative cooperation and encourage the exchange of best practices in parliamentary governance between states,” officials added.
