Starting this month, Bulgaria’s Parliamentary Library is launching a new Book of the Month initiative, the press office of the National Assembly said Tuesday.
At the initiative of National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova, the Parliamentary Library will showcase each month a significant literary work that introduces readers to history, contributes to the shaping of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage and enriches the nation’s spiritual life.
The Book of the Month will be selected by the Parliament Chair and made available to the public in the reading room at the National Assembly building, 1 Alexander I Square.
The initiative aims to promote the extensive library and archival collections of the National Assembly, while encouraging visitors to the institution to discover new works that stimulate thought, inspire public debate and offer a vision for the future.
In September, as Bulgaria marks the anniversaries of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia and the country’s declaration of independence, the National Assembly Library is presenting Bulgarian Chronicles by Stefan Tsanev. The four-volume series is Dotsova’s first selection for the Book of the Month initiative.
“With this landmark work, we are also marking 90th birthday of Stefan Tsanev, a living Bulgarian classic and a major writer and playwright,” Dotsova said as quoted by Parliament’s press office.
The Parliamentary Library maintains the archives of the National Assembly and also builds collections of books and periodicals in Bulgarian and foreign languages covering a wide range of fields of knowledge. Its holdings include official publications, reference works, dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well as legal, political and historical studies.
As of 2026, the library’s total holdings amount to approximately 350,000 items, excluding parliamentary transcripts, draft legislation and other materials preserved by the institution.
The library subscribes to 34 foreign periodicals, including newspapers and magazines, 12 of which are available through online subscriptions. It also subscribes to 55 Bulgarian periodicals, seven of them online. Together with the State Gazette, this brings the total number of periodical titles to 90, the National Assembly said.
