New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has suffered another major setback after being sentenced to two years in a defamation case. Now his Lok Sabha membership has been terminated. Congress MP from Kerala’s Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as a Lok Sabha member after being held guilty of criminal defamation over his ‘Modi surname’ remark.
Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in a defamation case. Actually, he had given an objectionable statement about the entire Modi community. That’s why the court found him guilty. Although the court has stayed the sentence for a month so that he can appeal in the higher court, but has not stayed his conviction. The court has also given him bail.
Controversial remarks were made in 2019
Rahul Gandhi made controversial remarks at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka on April 13, 2019. The Congress leader had said – Why is the surname of Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi common? Why is the surname of all thieves Modi?
Regarding this statement of Rahul, BJP MLA Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against him. In his complaint, the BJP MLA had alleged that the Congress leader defamed the entire Modi community by allegedly saying that all thieves have the surname Modi?
