New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday issued formal notifications constituting the newly-elected Legislative Assemblies in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry, and forwarded them to the respective Governors for further constitutional processes.
In a communication, the poll body said the notifications were issued following the completion of the election process in these states and the declaration of results. “The Commission has completed all statutory formalities and has notified the constitution of the new Legislative Assemblies. The notifications have been sent to the respective Hon’ble Governors,” an ECI official said.
The move marks the formal beginning of the next phase of government formation, enabling Governors to invite parties or alliances with a majority to stake claim and form governments. In the case of Puducherry, the notification has been sent to the Lieutenant Governor in accordance with provisions governing Union Territories with legislatures.
Under the constitutional framework, once the Election Commission issues such notifications, the newly elected Assemblies are deemed to be constituted, paving the way for swearing-in ceremonies of elected members and the formation of new governments.
The Assembly elections in these states were closely watched, given their political significance and impact on regional and national dynamics. The results, declared on Monday, reflected diverse electoral outcomes across regions, with different parties securing mandates in different states.
Officials noted that the issuance of notifications is a routine but crucial step in the electoral cycle, ensuring a smooth transition from the election process to governance. The newly constituted Assemblies are expected to convene soon, where elected representatives will take oath and legislative business will commence.
