Governor Unveils Assam Govt’s Vision Amid Opposition Walkout in Assembly

Guwahati : Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Friday presented the new government’s vision for the next five years in his inaugural address to the 16th state Assembly, even as opposition legislators staged a walkout.

Barely five minutes into the speech, Congress and Raijor Dal members moved into the Well of the House, demanding that the government focus on pressing concerns such as inflation rather than Emphasizing past achievements. Congress MLAs displayed placards and raised slogans before leaving the chamber.

Raijor Dal legislators, led by Akhil Gogoi, initially remained seated and continued to voice their concerns during the Governor’s address. After about half an hour, they too exited the House, submitting a paper outlining the issues they had raised.

In his remarks, Acharya described the return of the BJP‑led NDA government for a third consecutive term as a reflection of public support for its policies. He emphasized that the mandate endorsed peace, economic stability, and inclusive development achieved over the past decade, noting that the restoration of peace had been “substantial and historic.”

The Governor urged citizens to exercise restraint in discretionary spending, echoing the Prime Minister’s call for austerity. He also welcomed the government’s decision to introduce legislation on the Uniform Civil Code during the current session, asserting that it would promote social harmony, justice, gender equality, and a modern Progressive society.
