India : The midterm elections are just around the corner and while all seats in the House of Representatives will be contested, that’s not the case for the US Senate. So how many seats in the Senate elections are up for grabs? Here is all you need to know.
Number of Senate Seats at Stake
In 2026, 35 of the 100 seats in the US Senate will be contested. These contests consist of 33 regular elections for six-year terms and two special elections to complete the remaining portions of existing terms.
Among the 33 regularly scheduled races, Republicans currently hold 20 seats, while Democrats hold 13. The two special elections will likewise be held for Republican-held seats, putting 22 Republican-held seats and 13 Democratic-held seats on the ballot in total.
The elections are scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and will coincide with races for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives.
US Midterm Elections: Key Races in the Senate Elections
Several Senate races are drawing nationwide attention due to their potential impact on control of the chamber. Some of the key ones experts are keeping an eye on include:
Georgia Senate Election: Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff is seeking re-election in Georgia, where statewide races have been competitive in recent election cycles. The contest matters to Democrats as they work to protect the Senate seats they currently hold.
Iowa Senate Election: Iowa represents another important Senate race. Republican Senator Joni Ernst announced that she would not run for re-election, creating an open seat in a state that has generally supported Republicans in recent federal elections.
Michigan Senate Election: Michigan’s Senate race is another highly watched contest. The seat is open after Democratic Senator Gary Peters decided not to run for re-election. Both parties are vying for the seat, making it a significant contest in the larger struggle for control of the Senate.
North Carolina Senate Election: North Carolina is also among the key races. Republican Senator Thom Tillis is not running for re-election, resulting in an open-seat contest.
Florida and Ohio: Florida and Ohio will conduct special Senate elections alongside the regularly scheduled contests. Both elections will determine who completes the terms of senators who were appointed. The special elections increase the 33 regularly scheduled races by two, bringing the total number of Senate seats on the ballot to 35.
US Midterm Elections: Which Party Has More to Defend in the Senate Election?
Republicans have more seats to defend in the 2026 Senate elections than Democrats as they currently hold 22 seats. Because more Republican-held seats are being contested, the party has more positions to defend in this election cycle. Democrats are working to win seats, whereas Republicans are focused on maintaining their majority.
US Midterm Elections: Importance of the Senate Elections
The 2026 midterm elections will decide whether Republicans keep their Senate majority or Democrats win enough seats to control the chamber.
Control of the Senate determines which party chairs committees, sets the legislative schedule, and oversees federal agencies. It may also affect the confirmation of judicial nominees and other presidential appointees.
A shift in the Senate majority could consequently influence the advancement of the Trump administration’s legislative priorities. Should Republicans maintain control, they would remain in charge of the chamber. Should Democrats secure a majority, they would gain greater control over the Senate’s legislative agenda and oversight activities.
About the US Senate
The US Senate is one of the two houses of the US Congress, together with the House of Representatives. It has a key role in passing federal laws, approving treaties, and confirming presidential appointments. The Senate consists of 100 members, with each of the 50 states represented by two senators regardless of its population. Senators serve six-year terms, with elections staggered so that roughly one-third of the chamber stands for election every two years.
