I feel patriotic: Indian-American Congressman praises Trump’s inauguration speech

Washington: Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar, who attended Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the US at the Capitol Rotunda, described his speech as patriotic and praised its focus on economic reforms and border security.
“There were some good elements of it (the speech). He worked on lowering the cost, helping the American dream, making sure everybody achieves the American dream, giving economic opportunities to all, not just a few,” Thanedar told India Today TV while reflecting on Trump’s address.
Shri Thanedar is an Indian-American businessman, author, and politician serving as the US representative from Michigan’s 13th congressional district since 2023. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
He described the event as a “unique environment celebrating America, celebrating the greatest country on earth,” adding, “I just felt very patriotic.”
Thanedar also noted the peaceful transition of power this time around. “A very peaceful transfer of power, you know, which obviously did not happen the last time around,” he said.
On areas where he could collaborate with the Trump administration, Thanedar emphasised the economy and border security.
“The economy, certainly. Making sure our borders are safe. We need to control our borders. We need to ensure that every American gets the opportunity to do good for himself or herself. Everyone is able to achieve their American dream. We need to lower prices. I think people are hurting. The cost of goods is way too high. That needs to be a number one focus: economy and access to economic success.”
Thanedar said his staff watched the ceremony live from his office and were pleased with some of Trump’s announcements.
When asked what resonated the most, he said, “This is a great country. The greatness of America stuck with me. It’s amazing for my constituents to see that.”
Sitting in the Rotunda during the historic ceremony, Thanedar reflected on the nation’s exceptionalism.
“This is a great country. And just the greatness of America — you know, when I was sitting there on that historic occasion, in the Rotunda, middle of the Rotunda — I’m looking at it and saying, what a great country, what a great country. I believe in America. I believe in America’s future. And there is no place like America,” he said.
