NEW DELHI : According to sources, a draft of the motion is being prepared, with the notice likely to be submitted in the coming days.
This would not be the first time the Opposition has sought to bring an impeachment motion against the CEC.
The INDIA bloc is preparing to move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta in both Houses of Parliament after a report raised questions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
According to sources, a draft of the motion is being prepared, with the notice likely to be submitted in the coming days. Sources said it is not necessary for Parliament to be in session for the notice to be moved and that it is most likely to be submitted by next week.
The development comes after The Indian Express reported that questions were repeatedly raised within the three-member Election Commission over issues related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls by two of the three Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
The national rollout of the SIR has been under the supervision of all three commissioners. However, according to the report, Sandhu and Joshi formally objected on record at least 14 times over the last 10 months — including four times on a single day — to decisions taken and orders issued that they said were made without their knowledge.
The Election Commission, however, has maintained that decisions relating to the SIR were taken unanimously with the approval of all three commissioners.
This would not be the first time the Opposition has sought to bring an impeachment motion against the CEC. In March 2026, a notice seeking the removal of Gyanesh Kumar was submitted in the Rajya Sabha with the support of 130 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha members.
The March move marked the first time such a motion had been brought against the head of the Election Commission. However, the Rajya Sabha Chairman and the Lok Sabha Speaker rejected the impeachment motion.
In April, Opposition parties submitted another impeachment motion, which is currently pending.
Meanwhile, the Congress directed its state units to organise protest marches to their respective state election commission offices on September 25, demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s immediate arrest, removal from office, and an independent review of all decisions and electoral roll changes made under him.
