Bengaluru: The Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation One Election Bill’ held extensive consultations in Bengaluru with political parties, legal fraternity and civil society yesterday. Briefing media persons, the Chairman of the Committee, P P Chaudhary informed that Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Veerappa Moily and representatives from BJP and other parties presented their views on ‘One Nation One Election Bill’ referred to JPC by the Parliament.
He emphasised that objections and recommendations are being collected by the JPC during their visits to different states. On challenges posed by the proposal, he said that synchronising elections will need to prematurely dissolve a few state Assemblies and resolve issues arising out of anti defection laws, no confidence motion and President rule. He informed that frequent elections are not in national interest as it impacts development due to election code of conduct, hampers Economic activities, adversely impacts tourism apart from impacting the education department, Banks and related wings of the Government.
