Thiruvananthapuram : In an unprecedented constitutional development, the Kerala Legislative Assembly is set to move a special resolution seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala will introduce a formal resolution in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday, calling for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner of India.
The resolution, to be moved by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan under Rule 118 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, would mark the first time in Indian parliamentary history that a state legislature has initiated a resolution seeking the removal of a sitting Chief Election Commissioner.
The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), the opposition alliance in the state, has confirmed that it will vote in favour of the resolution. Meanwhile, the three legislators belonging to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are expected to oppose it.
The draft resolution calls for addressing widespread anomalies arising from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands the full restoration of voting rights to all eligible electors.
The motion also urges the Central government to restructure the committee responsible for selecting the Chief Election Commissioner, proposing that it comprise the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a representative of the Supreme Court of India.
