New Delhi: A court in Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti on Wednesday awarded 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment to Nationalist Congress Party MP Mohd Faizal, who has represented the union territory in Parliament since 2014, in a 2009 murder attempt case.
The court, while convicting four of the 23 accused in the case, suspended the bail of Faizal and three others. Faizal was convicted of assaulting his relative Mohammad Salih.
The prosecution said that Faizal led a group of people who attacked Saleh and seriously injured him after an argument over the construction of a shed. Salih was taken to Kerala, where he was hospitalized for months.
Faizal was expected to move the Kerala High Court, which has jurisdiction over Lakshadweep, against the conviction and to stay his disqualification as an MLA.
There was no immediate reaction from Faizal.
