LS Speaker Reconstituted Committees on Women Empowerment & MPs Salaries and Allowances

Empowerment of Women Committee for 2026-27 with senior MPs :

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla established the Empowerment of Women Committee for the year 2026-27, effective from April 21, 2026. Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament D Purandeswari has been appointed Chairperson of the committee.

The committee comprises several women Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha members include Hema Malini, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Mahima Kumari Mewar, and Smita Uday Wagh. Rajya Sabha members include Sagarika Ghose, Swati Maliwal, Sudha Murty, and PT Usha among others.

The committee has been formed to focus on issues related to women’s welfare, empowerment, and development.

The Committee on Empowerment of Women was first constituted on April 29, 1997, during the 11th Lok Sabha following two identical resolutions passed in both Houses of Parliament on March 8, 1996, aimed at improving the status of women.

The committee consists of 30 members: 20 nominated by the Speaker from among the Lok Sabha members and 10 nominated by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha from among Rajya Sabha members. The committee’s term does not exceed one year and it is reconstituted annually. Members are expected to collaborate across party lines for the empowerment of women.

Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of MPs Reconstituted

The Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament was reconstituted on Friday, with appointments made by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan. This statutory body convenes annually to review and regulate MPs’ compensation.

Composed of 15 members—10 from the Lok Sabha and 5 from the Rajya Sabha—this committee was established under the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. It aims to ensure a balanced structure for MPs’ pay, allowances, housing, medical care, and other facilities.

As per a recent Lok Sabha bulletin, 14 members have been nominated with one vacancy remaining. The committee operates under a chairperson elected by its members and holds the responsibility for maintaining equitable conditions for MPs throughout the year.
