New Parliament House likely to be inaugurated in March

New Delhi: The new Parliament building is likely to be inaugurated in March, when the House will convene for the second part of the budget session.

Officials said the work is going on in full swing and is expected to be completed by February. Sources said the second part of the budget session is likely to be held in the new Parliament building. The budget session is traditionally held in two parts – the first part usually begins with the President’s address to a joint sitting of both the Houses on 30 or 31 January. The Union Budget is presented on 1 February. The first part usually ends on 8 or 9 February. The second half of the session usually starts in the second week of March and continues till the beginning of May. Parliamentary sources said the second part of the session is likely to be held in the new Parliament House, which is adjacent to the present structure.

Last month, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said that the construction work of the new Parliament building is going on at a very fast pace. The new Parliament building is part of the redevelopment of Central Vista, the country’s power corridor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building in December 2020. The new building, constructed by Tata Projects Limited, will also have a grand Constitution Hall, a lounge for Members of Parliament, a library, a library to showcase India’s democratic heritage. Multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.
