New Delhi : The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology is set to convene on May 26 to deliberate on several issues concerning the telecom sector. The meeting will begin at 11:00 AM at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi.
The agenda includes a briefing by representatives from the Ministry of Communications (Department of Telecommunications) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on ‘Quality of Service (QoS) Standards and Consumer Protection in Telecom Sector,’ with a particular emphasis on net neutrality as it pertains to the Department of Telecommunications.
India has enhanced its position in international telecom and digital policy matters during the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2026 meeting held in Geneva from April 28 to May 8. The country secured support for hosting the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-2030), according to the Ministry of Communications.
An Indian delegation, led by Mukesh Kumar, Deputy Director General (International Relations) of the Department of Telecommunications, participated in the conference alongside the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations office in Geneva.
India formally presented its proposal to host the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in 2030 during the Council proceedings. The ITU Council accepted this proposal, representing a significant advancement in India’s role in global telecom and digital governance. Formal approval is anticipated at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026, scheduled to take place in Doha, Qatar, in November.
The Indian delegation also engaged in discussions on crucial issues related to global telecommunications and digital cooperation, including ITU regional presence, ITU membership, and the organisation of ITU events.
As part of its outreach for the forthcoming ITU elections, India hosted a networking reception at the ITU premises on April 30, attended by representatives from 69 member states.
