Parliamentary Panel on Defence reviews BRO infra projects in J&K and Ladakh

JAMMU: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence, chaired by Radha Mohan Singh, on Monday reviewed the progress of strategic infrastructure projects being executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, with the panel appreciating the agency’s role in strengthening border connectivity and operational preparedness in difficult Himalayan terrain.

The committee concluded a two-day study visit to Jammu from May 24 to 25, during which Members of Parliament, accompanied by officials from the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Ministry of Defence, were briefed on ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in frontier regions.

The delegation was received by Shri Harendra Kumar, AVSM, VSM, Additional Director General at Headquarters Directorate General Border Roads (DGBR), while Chief Engineers of Project Sampark, Project Beacon, Project Vijayak, Project Himank and Project Yojak participated in detailed presentations and interactions with the committee.

During the review meetings, BRO officials outlined the status of strategic road networks and critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity in remote and high-altitude sectors of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Discussions also focused on engineering challenges, logistical constraints and the operational importance of all-weather infrastructure in border areas.

The parliamentary panel acknowledged the progress achieved by the BRO despite harsh climatic conditions and difficult topography, noting the organisation’s contribution towards strengthening defence mobility as well as civilian access in remote regions.

Officials familiar with the proceedings said the interaction also highlighted the broader strategic value of infrastructure development in enhancing national security preparedness along sensitive frontier sectors.

The visit concluded with an interactive session between committee members and BRO officials, reflecting what authorities described as the organisation’s continuing commitment towards infrastructure expansion, operational readiness and nation-building in strategically important regions of the country.
