New Delhi :Activist Sonam Wangchuk has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliver a “decriminalised Parliament” as an Independence Day gift, calling for reforms to reduce the influence of criminal elements in Indian politics.
Wangchuk, in a post on X on August 14, appealed for public suggestions on selfless individuals whose views he could consult to inform such reforms. He wrote, “Can we seek this gift from PM on this Independence Day..! A Decriminalised Parliament, as promised by the Prime Minister in 2014. And I’m sure the LOP Sh. Rahul Gandhi and all parties will readily agree for this revolutionary step to clean up our democracy.”
He emphasised the need for a “peaceful revolution” in the method of selecting leaders to ensure India remains a respectable nation by 2047. Wangchuk highlighted that nearly half of Members of Parliament face criminal charges and a third have serious allegations such as murder, rape and kidnapping, contributing to a trust deficit.
Before becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Mr Modi pledged to address the issue of criminal records among MPs. He promised to establish a committee to review pending criminal cases against newly elected members of Parliament.
Wangchuk stated his intention to consult the “best minds” across the country for ideas on the necessary changes. He specified, “Not just intellectuals who think but people who are selfless, fearless men & women of character & substance.” He noted that from his remote location in Ladakh, he was unaware of such individuals and requested people to propose names from their regions.
Calling for public participation, he said, “Together can we start India’s 2nd independence movement!” He also encouraged people to spread his message and translate it into regional languages where possible.
