Chennai : The Tamil Nadu Assembly became the stage for a sharp political confrontation on Thursday as Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a scathing critique of the state’s current administration. Stalin accused the TVK government of failing to deliver new initiatives during its first 116 days in power, while simultaneously alleging that the state’s law and order situation has deteriorated significantly.
The exchange intensified when Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who oversees the police portfolio, intervened to address the accusations. Challenging the DMK to stay in the House, the Chief Minister urged the opposition to remain present on Monday to hear his detailed, point-by-point rebuttal rather than staging a walkout. He requested that the Speaker ensure a commitment from the opposition members to participate in the upcoming session, promising a comprehensive response to all questions raised.
Allegations of Governance and Security Failures:
During the debate, Stalin claimed that the current government has not introduced a single new scheme since taking office. He argued that the administration is merely relying on programs established during the previous DMK tenure, while failing to either scrap or properly endorse them. The opposition leader further alleged that the state government is prioritizing promotional content over substantive policy, claiming that the administration has shifted from the progress seen under the previous regime to a state of stagnation.
Stalin’s critique extended to the state’s security record, where he cited eight custodial deaths within the first 116 days of the TVK government. He also highlighted the restriction of public access to Chennai’s Marina Beach during student protests against NEET as evidence of a decline in democratic space. Furthermore, the opposition leader raised concerns regarding the handling of POCSO cases and drug enforcement, questioning why the current government promoted senior police officers who had served in key departments during the previous administration if the prior record was as poor as the current government claims.
A Call for Legislative Accountability:
The Chief Minister remained firm in his stance, emphasizing that he would address every issue brought forward by the opposition. He stated that he would be fully briefed on all inquiries made in his absence and insisted that the opposition should not avoid the debate by leaving the Chamber.
