Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana emphasised the importance of discussion and debate in a democracy ahead of the Monsoon session scheduled to begin on August 3. Speaking on Sunday, Mahana said, “Democracy is built on both agreement and disagreement. Discussion and debate are an essential part of democracy and make it stronger.”
Samajwadi Party MLA Ravidas Mehrotra criticised the planned short duration of the session, suggesting it would not be enough to adequately address public issues. “The House is scheduled for very little time, which is not enough to discuss the problems. The government is deliberately keeping the session short to avoid discussions on public issues,” he asserted. Mehrotra called for the session to be extended, highlighting the approaching election year as a reason to allow more time to raise and resolve grievances. “We want the session duration to be extended, especially as an election year is approaching, so that people’s problems can be raised and solutions can be found,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya described the session as eagerly awaited and significant for both legislators and the public. He indicated that the agenda would include legislative business as well as the presentation of a supplementary budget intended to improve living conditions in the state. “The session of the Legislative Assembly is eagerly awaited by both the honourable members and the general public of the state, as it is very important. This session will not only involve legislative work but also the presentation of a supplementary budget aimed at improving the lives of the people,” Maurya said. He added that the government expects the opposition to raise issues and confirmed the administration is prepared to respond during the debates.
