New Delhi : The Winter Session of Parliament will be held from December 1 to 19, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju declared on Saturday. The session, lasting 15 working days, is expected to focus on key legislative business ahead of the new year.
In a post on X, Rijiju said, “The Hon’ble President of India Droupadi Murmu has approved the proposal of the Government to convene the Winter Session of Parliament from 1st December 2025 to 19th December 2025 (subject to exigencies of Parliamentary business).” He expressed hope that the session would be “constructive and meaningful,” contributing to strengthening democracy and serving the aspirations of citizens.
Last year, the Winter Session was held from 25 November to 20 December.
Opposition Raises Concerns
Opposition leaders criticised the shorter duration, claiming it reflected the government’s reluctance to engage in discussions. Congress’s Rajya Sabha Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh said in a post that the session was “unusually delayed and truncated,” adding that the schedule suggested “the government has no business to transact, no Bills to get passed, and no debates to be allowed.”
The session will also be the first presided over by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan as Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, following his election in September. Political observers noted that his debut, coupled with the outcome of the Bihar election, could influence the tone and dynamics of parliamentary proceedings.
The monsoon session earlier this year was marked by high drama, including the unexpected resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Review in Bihar. The Lok Sabha’s productivity had fallen to 30.6 per cent, with several sittings disrupted by demonstrations.
During that session, Parliament passed key legislation, including the new Income Tax Bill, the National Sports Governance Bill, and the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, which sought to curb online money gaming.
The agenda for the upcoming Winter Session is yet to be announced.
